L&G Howells makers of great waterwheels. In
1865 the ironworks made two for the Isle of Man. A 55
ft diameter wheel for East Laxey and a 50ft wheel for the Snaefell
lead mine.After 50 years the Snaefell wheel was sold to a China Clay works
on Bodmin Moor Cornwall, The `Gawns Wheel' as it was called, was at the
time, the largest working waterwheel in England. Removed in 1971 to a Silver
and Lead mine museum at Llywernog near Aberystwyth,
where it awaits restoration to its former glory.
